SK Telecom to Begin 2.5G Services Before May 2002
nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

June 20, 2001 (SEOUL) -- SK Telecom Co., Ltd. announced plans to begin so-called 2.5G (2.5
generation) mobile phone services called CDMA2000 1x EV-DO before May 2002.

In a bid to offer the 2.5G mobile services, the Korean company signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc., which owns the patent rights to CDMA technology.

Officials of SK Telecom said they plan to complete the roll-out of networking facilities by March 2002 after selecting equipment companies at the end of this September.

Commercial services will kick off in 2002 in 26 major cities before Korea hosts the 2002 World Cup in partnership with Japan, said SK Telecom.

Other mobile carriers, including KT Freetel and KT ICOM, also are expected to begin 2.5G services early next year.

It's nice to get some firm dates for 1xEV-DO. I believe we have some fairly firm dates from KDDI also and a probable date range from Sprint PCS. Note they call this 2.5G. Doesn't SK Telecom have a CDMA 200 1X roll out in progress which is considered 3G? So if you have a 1X 3G network and add 1x-DO is it then 2.5G? 2.75G 3.5G? I've never liked 2.5G as a label, it's undefined.
