What if the woman is a prostitute?
The john still has to support the child. His child, his obligation. Tough. Assuming, of course, she can prove he's the father. Which is easier these days than in the past.
If she happens to be a married prostitute, of course, the presumption is that the child is the husbands, and even if it is proved genetically that he couldn't be the father, in most states he still is considered the father. Why? Better for the kid that way.
BTW, if you are a comfortably off man and father a child, even purely by accident, with a woman and the child has serious medical problems, it's Katie bar the door. You could be on the hook, assuming the Court thinks you can afford it, for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year of care costs. No way out of it. Until you're impovrished, you're on the line for all the costs. Whoppee.
This is so even if you find out in the second month that the child has a serious birth defect and will need to be hospitalized all its life. You can beg and plead with the woman to abort the child, but if she refuses, you're stuck. There goes your income, your stock portfolio, if you're married probably your marriage (any smart wife will get out very early on and save what she can out of the marital assets, since hers won't be touched by the child's needs, but his will be. Wait ten years to get divorced, and there may be nothing left)
