Tim,
>>>> I think Joe is focused on GE not getting HON and the long term negative impact to GE's stock price. We can all pick the strengths and weaknesses of each system but I'm baised and agree with out system. <<<<
I realise Joe expressed those views in light of the GE issue. Please understand that my position is not to argue with his, but more of an awareness that his position was based on the issue of finance/MONEY. To make a comparison Im a strong believer that one should look at the whole picture not just once aspect. Please also keep in mind that many people are listening to him, and I even got the feeling that his presentation was demeaning to the Europeans due to his focus on only 1 issue - money. The media is a powerful tool, and do we really want others to also have such a narrow view. Let me give an example.
In our family we really seldom use the words "I love you", and I was once asked if I say I love you to my mother everyday who is elderly and sick, and who I care for 24 hours a day to the extend that I have to change her diapers about 5 times a day, and at times where I have to spoon feed her. I mentioned that I didnt feel that it was common in the Chinese culture to use those words everyday. So this person made an extremely strong comment to me condemning the CHINESE culture since we do not use those words so often. By the way this person also has an elderly mother who is having problems living by herself and which the children are planning to send to a nursing home. In the meantime she visits her mother, who lives about 5 miles away, about once a month, when its convient to her.
This person has also condemned that Arabics, specificly the IRAQI's saying how brutal their culture is, which she was basicly reciting what she heard from the media. This person is from Austrian/German descent. I did remind her that in this century(last century) one of the most brutal, if not the most brutal was a man named Hitler, who was not of Arabic descent.
Again, my point is not which culture is better, nor do I want to get into an arguement about it. My issue is the narrowness of the focus. We can always find something better if the focus is narrow. But how are we going to better understand other cultures if we use the narrow approach as Joe did. |
