Have you tried circle hooks for cats? I release most of mine and the circle hooks only dig in at the edge of the mouth. I've been out once this year and it was windy. Anchored instead of drifting and put a live shad on a circle hook, 20' of line and then a balloon. Laid back for a nap and let the wind take the balloon away from the boat. I knew something was up when the balloon came back toward the boat. 3 pound channel. I gave him a kiss, he said thank you or croak croak then I returned him to do what ever he was doing.
