I guess the alternative is for Intel to continue pricing their high-end desktop processors at $800, thus allowing the competition to sweep up the market with lower prices.

I don't see the purpose of whining and crying over a price war or who started it. If there is more product for sale than the market is willing to buy, obviously prices will fall. If AMD or the 'Droids don't like it, TOUGH. That's the market they're in, and that's the way they chose to compete against Intel.
