HK Mobile Phone Operators Agree On SMS Sys From Comverse HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Hong Kong's six mobile phone network operators have all agreed to use a common system for their short message services (SMS), the system provider said Thursday. The common system will allow mobile phone users to send messages to each other irrespective of which network they are connected to. Comverse, a unit of Nasdaq-listed Comverse Technology Inc. (CMVT), said the six operators have all agreed to use its Intelligent Short Message Service Center (ISMSC) to support messages sent between their respective networks. Until now, Hong Kong's 5.4 million mobile phone users have only been able to exchange messages with other users on the same network. Comverse's system can connect mobile phone networks using different technologies, such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). It also provides full connectivity with Internet Protocol-based services, supports the 2.5G General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) technology and is fully prepared for the migration to third generation technologies, the company said. The agreement has the support of Hong Kong's telecommunications regulator, Comverse said. Comverse is a world leading provider of software and systems for network-based multimedia communications services.
