Power Technology is developing lead-acid batteries which use reticulated lead-foam plates to increase performance. The foam plates have a larger surface area than standard grid plates thus a larger area to come in contact with electrolyte. The greater the contact area the more chemical reaction takes place, the more powerful the battery for its size.

In what could be more bad news for the lead industry, Israeli battery maker Schnapp and Canadian software developer IQ Power are planning to introduce a ve-hicle
battery with lower lead content into the European market by 2001. The batteries weigh about 40% less, recharge faster, and work better in extreme weather than conventional lead-acid batteries.
