BATTERY/BATTERY HYBRID RESEARCH. Electric Fuel Corporation, under contract with the German Government, will build an all-electric hybrid vehicle development and demonstration program. The four-year $10.6 million cooperative program will be used to convert DaimlerChrysler cargo vans to all-electric hybrid drive mostly powered by Electric Fuel's Zinc Air (tm) batteries. Cooperative member Varta will provide booster batteries, and members Dornier Gmbh and EPOC AG will provide ultracapacitors to the project. In a similar project in the U.S., Zinc Air batteries - which are recycled not recharged - power a transit bus.
