I doubt a nation has to have a common race, or common religion, we in the US surely do not. I hate to bring into this argument a Satan like Stalin, but in the 20'/30' when the Soviet union was being formed, the ideological question of what is a "Nation" came up, and he came p with five principles. A group of people can be considered a nation if they have , a common heritage (culture), a common, language, a common geography and two others I do not remember (religion could be one). Well, the Jews had only 4 out of five, not having a common geography. That was the impetus for the formation of Birobijan, a "Yiddish" state with the Soviet Union.
