Michael - Re: "Merced Related Patents"

The Intel patents unearthed by Microprocessor Report concern themselves with operating a device with basically two native instruction sets - the x86 and the ISA (presumably ISA is the old PA-RISC/HP instruction set.)

These patents describe techniques for Jump and return (common low level operations for going (ie. "jumping") to a new instruction/location after a specified condition occurs. This changes the execution flow from the next sequential instruction in a code sequence to a new one. This "branch" occurs often after test conditions are met or after interrupt routines are processed.

After the branch, the "return" process has to know what "language" was being used (x86 or ISA) BEFORE the branch took place.

The patents are issued on techniques that implement this "memory" process, as part of the low level housekeeping within the CPU chip.

To the INVESTOR, these patents mean that:

A. Intel is quite far along in implementing an advanced DUAL language processor - x86 and PA-Risc/ISA.

B. God Help AMD and Cyrix (and every one else) if they try and clone this new Intel architecture - which will be surrounded by a fortress of legal armaments and ammunition.
