Because it'd be too unfair to liken him to Hitler <g> I guess some European leaders are not completely oblivious of what befell Europe 60 years ago when each and every far-rightist creed was fashionable --from Franco's Spain to Hitler's Germany to Mussolini's Italy to... With the Soviet Union as a useful ideological foil. In short, we all know how totalitarianism starts but we're still pussyfooting and anxious about when we ought to rein it in... Below is a news snippet from Belgium's daily Le Soir. It reports a complaint filed by a (Surinamese-?)Dutch citizen against the EU. The plaintiff claimed that, although over 30 million Europeans belong to one ethnic minority or another, they make up only a scanty part of EU bureaucrats... EU ombudsman Jacob Soderman has agreed to investigate.

Le médiateur européen Jacob Soderman a accepté d'examiner une plainte, relative à l'éventuelle existence de racisme dans le recrutement des institutions et organes communautaires. La plainte émane d'un citoyen néerlandais, selon qui malgré la présence de trente millions de personnes
originaires d'une minorité ethnique dans l'Union, à peine quelques-unes travaillent au sein des institutions européennes. Le médiateur a demandé à la Commission de lui fournir, avant le 31 octobre 2001, les statistiques sur la proportion de fonctionnaires et autres agents des Communautés européennes originaires d'une minorité ethnique.
