Yes it was...1975 was pretty bad too. In both periods, '75 and '81-'82, household wealth dropped from apx. 15% to -2% and 15% to 6% respectively, foreshadowing the coming recessions.

FWIW the annual % change in household wealth has fallen from 15% in 1999 to -15% currently. The largest decline (by over 10%) since 1946!
