Catalina Marketing Cuts Fiscal 1st-Qtr Estimates; Shares Fall

St. Petersburg, Florida, June 21 (Bloomberg) -- Catalina Marketing Corp. shares fell as much as 18 percent after it cut its forecast for the fiscal first quarter ending June 30 and for the rest of its fiscal year as customers of the provider of coupons and marketing services to retailers reduced spending.

The shares fell $4.26 to $28.86 in late morning trading of 827,900, almost four times the three-month daily average. Earlier they touched $27.

The company said in a news release distributed by PR Newswire that it expects first-quarter earnings to be 13 cents to 15 cents. The company was expected to earn 20 cents, the average estimate of eight analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial.

St. Petersburg, Florida-based Catalina Marketing said it expects to earn 18 cents to 20 cents in the fiscal second quarter ending in September. It's expected to earn 28 cents, the average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by First Call.
