Article seems dated. The information should be known by now:

Concerns centred on whether those in remote areas would be able to receive signals, considering that the range of a CDMA base station is far less than that of an AMPS station. Once the network is fully shut down in December 2000, this will be known. Software is available that allows the range of a CDMA station to be increased from around 55km to 150km.
