I don't think ML's analyst feels stupid at all - he will most probably be rewarded handsomely by his employer for:

1) Helping ML and its elite clients to close their short positions at a huge profit;

2) Getting in CIEN on the cheap.

I think it wasn't a question of competence, rather one of integrity and ethics.
