WALL STREET JOURNAL: NO RELIEF SEEN FOR COMMUNICATIONS-CHIP SECTOR
Jun 21, 2001, (Wall Street Journal /FT World Media Abstracts via COMTEX) -- The
communications-chip segment of the $177bn chip market will see sales decline a
further 21% this year with little hope of recovery until 2002 at the earliest.
According to Bill McClean of research firm IC Insights, chip manufacturers like
Broadcom Corp., Applied Micro Circuits Corp., Vitesse Semiconductor and
PMC-Sierra Corp "will definitely be hit harder and will take longest to recover"
compared with chip makers in other sectors. Even Intel Corp., the world's
largest chip maker, said this month that it expected further declines in its
networking communications business which accounts for 20% of its total business.
