(though it wouldn't come to pass -- doctors would stop doing abortions if the price were a lengthy prison sentence, and the few who were willing to would be in jail soon enough and not around to do the abortions).

Oh, come on Christopher. You know very well that in a society where abortion was considered murder--all the abortions would be done illegally underground, or by oneself--not by "doctors."

As I said, Chris: a country that granted citizenship to a smudge of cells, would already have divorced itself from all aspects of Western civilization that I consider relevant or worthy of acknowledgment. I would consider this eventuality to constitute de facto evidence of the demise of a rational and sane society.

I understand that the concept of "civilization" is sufficiently malleable to admit of a legitimate disagreement with my very personal assessment; and those embracing such disagreement might indeed choose to live with the daily consequences of such an ethic. But I would not. I would consider it the most wrecthed, miserable, and savage society ever to have bled on the face of Mother Earth--or to have stained the conscience of mankind. But that is just me.

If you chose to live there, and if you chose to call it "civilized"-well, this is the prerogative of a free and independent mind; a mind in a body which belongs to you-and to you alone. I respect your right to differ with me on this question of what constitutes a "civilized" society.
