The book-to-bill ratio reported by domestic manufacturers of semiconductor equipment moved slightly upward in May.
New orders fell 3% from the previous month, while shipments fell 9%. Bookings were only 25% of the level of May of last year.
Bookings were only 25% of the level of May of last year. The pace of decline was the shallowest since last October, but there is little hope for a rebound without stronger IT demand.
Expansion plans are being delayed in Taiwan and elsewhere in response to decelerating growth in 2001, and the ongoing downturn in pricing.
