PARIS -(Dow Jones)- A consortium led by Alcatel Space, the satellite unit of French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA (ALA), has received a EUR369 million contract to build two scientific satellites for the European Space Agency, Alcatel said Friday.
Alcatel Space will be the main contractor for the two satellites, called Herschel and Planck, and it will subcontract Italy's Alenia Spazio (I.ALE) to supply the two platforms.
Astrium GmbH, a unit of European Aeronautic Defense & Space Co. (N.EAD), will provide the payload module and perform the integration of the Herschel satellite, while Alcatel Space will do the same for the Planck satellite.
Construction of the two satellites has already begun, Alcatel said.
