Sorry, hag, I can't quite swallow all of that whole. Corporate marketing has become extremely sophisticated, implementing advanced psychological theory, the practical application of the latest market research in order to prey on human vulnerabilities that today even includes the collection of personal information about all of us by means that we are only just beginning to have a say about. And when these companies achieve the logical consequences of their marketing efforts you think we should stand idly by while they throw up their hands and claim innocence? If that's the case I'm afraid you are the one who has been brainwashed.

There will always be ideological conflict on the question of whether private enterprise owes anything to the greater communal good. The laws we already have governing trade of every kind are an effort to guage that obligation. You may argue that a given law is either irrelevant, overreaching or misguided in some way, but in the end there will always be those who believe that producers must be socially conscious and that the legitimate role of government is to "provide for the common good" by herding in those entrepreneurial actions that go beyond whatever the dominant definition of civic behavior may be at that time.
