Because that is what the market will bear. They could sell it for less, but why when people will pay more. I can make that machine for 8k and by a GE warranty for 1k that will be totally on par with the Compaq machine for features and service (plus my logo will be cuter:-)

<BTW - the $20k was just a round number. The actual entry point for an Origin is $12k>

The actual entry point for a dual PII is $4,000 and a quad PPro is $6,000. Still no comparison.
