Latest Clinton Lawsuit Offers Star Studded Cast newsmax.com Latest Clinton Lawsuit Offers Star Studded Cast
It reads like the A-list of Hollywood invitees to the most exclusive party on Oscar night.
Barbra Streisand, Cher, Diana Ross, Shirley MacLaine, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston, Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick Swayze, Michael Jackson, Larry King, George Hamilton, Michael Bolton, Patti Labelle, Toni Braxton, Paul Anka, Melissa Ethridge, Muhammad Ali, Red Buttons, Ted Danson, Jimmy Smits, Mary Steenbergen, Gregory Peck, Dionne Warwick, Olivia Newton John, Melanie Griffith, Morgan Fairchild and more.
But this isn't the cast of the next James Cameron blockbuster -- it's the witness list for the latest lawsuit filed by Judical Watch in California state court this week.
The legal watchdog group is representing Hollywood mogul Peter Paul of Stan Lee Media, who says he ponied-up $2 million to bankroll an August 2000 fund-raising gala on behalf of Mrs. Clinton's Senate campaign.
But Bill and Hillary took the money and ran, Paul claims, reneging on a promise that the president would join the board of directors of SLM after he left office.
On top of underwriting Hillary's tinseltown gala, Mr. Paul put together quite a sweet deal in an effort to get Bill to come aboard.
According to Paul's legal complaint, the agreement was as follows:
"President Clinton would make a one year commitment to work with SLM and/or Mondo (English Inc., also owned by Paul) in exchange for $10 million worth of SLM stock and $5 million in cash, as well as a $1 million contribution to the Clinton Presidential Library."
Acting as the official go-between for this arrangement was none other than James Levin, the one-time Chicago topless bar owner who gained notoriety last year when it was learned he'd spent several nights in the White House and pledged to contribute $1 million to the Clinton Library fund.
Levin kept Mr. Paul on board even as the budget for Hillary's fund-raiser ballooned well beyond what he initially expected.
At one point Mrs. Clinton demanded that SLM hire Gary Smith, a Hollywood producer friend of the Clintons who had put together their first inaugural ball and who was producing the Democratic National Convention just days after the gala.
And the Hillary fave didn't come cheap. Smith demanded a whopping $850,000 fee. Levin promised Paul that he'd whittle Smith's contract down. But the pricey producer agreed to trim only a relatively meager $50,000 from his deal.
As the costs of Hillary's fund-raiser continued to explode, Mr. Paul grew ever more antsy about his deal. Levin kept him on the reservation by offering more White House promises "as a show of good faith":
According to the Judicial Watch complaint, Levin promised the following on Clinton's behalf:
* The President?s support for a Kennedy Center Honor for Stan Lee.
* The President?s support for a Presidential Medal of Freedom to be awarded to Stan Lee at The White House.
* A reception for Stan Lee at The White House
* An official visit to the offices of SLM by the President
* A stay in the Lincoln Bedroom for Plaintiff and his wife
* A weekend at Camp David for Plaintiff and his wife
* An invitation to the President?s last official State Dinner at The White House for Plaintiff and his wife
* The President?s Participation in the global broadcast of the Hollywood Christmas Parade being produced by SLM
But in the end, Paul and his partner Stan Lee got bubkiss, while the Clintons not only took the money and ran, they failed to report Paul's contributions to the Federal Election Commission.
The first grifters' Peter Paul con was certainly unethical -- but was it illegal?
Paul has nothing by way of a written contract. And days after the gala, the Clintons told reporters they had no idea he had produced the event.
But that's where Cher, Whoopi, Babs and all the other Hollywood gliteratti come in. Paul says that more than a few on the gala's guestlist were privy to the plan to have Clinton join Stan Lee.
Brad Pitt, for instance, was told directly about the plan. So was John Travolta. And Hillary personally introduced Paul's wife to Barbra Streisand -- telling the Democratic diva that Mr. Paul had produced her extravagant fund-raiser, thereby undermining later claims she knew nothing about who picked up the tab.
In case all that Hollywood starpower isn't enough to put this lawsuit in the middle of the media spotlight, Paul's complaint also contains these intruiging tidbits:
"During the event, President Clinton introduced Plaintiff to his daughter, Chelsea Clinton. In the President?s presence and while sitting next to the President and Chelsea Clinton during the concert, Plaintiff and Chelsea Clinton discussed how Plaintiff had planned and paid for the fundraiser. Plaintiff also described his plans to work with the President after leaving office, and even suggested that Chelsea Clinton work for SLM too.
"Also during the course of the brunch, Chelsea Clinton related to Plaintiff and his guests how she had been up late playing 'Scrabble' with her father after the Hollywood Tribute fundraiser and they had discussed Plaintiff?s generous gift of the event the night before. Chelsea Clinton described how her father had considered the event one of the highlights of his experiences as President, and his enthusiasm about the prospect of working with Plaintiff when he left The White House."
Chelsea reportedly sent Mr. Paul a thank you note documenting her conversation with her dad.
Can't keep mr bill out of the news.
