What's going on here? We're in agreement!

I've got agree with your observation on parents, too. It's not an absolute- -military schools educate their charges without parental involvement- -but under ordinary circumstances, some parental involvement is necessary.

One thing that has puzzled me is that supposedly the schools have declined dramatically over the last half-century. I doubt this. I suspect there are two truths that people in general and the education establishment don't want to admit.
People in general don't want to admit that American schools never were all that good- -at least in comparison to European and Asian systems. Part of the reason is that, at least until recent decades, our system handled a wider spectrum of children. In Europe, only the creme de la creme made it into high school. Here since the fifties, we have pursued universal high school graduation. Another reason is that we glorify the "practical man" and denigrate "eggheads" and "nerds". (Bill Gates has done wonders for the image of nerds. Its hard to laugh at $50,000,000,000!)

The education establishment has long promoted the idea that the educational system is failing. Yet is it? We are, and have been for many decades, the world leader in science and technology. They claim this is because of imported intellect. Yet is it? Most of the Nobel Prizes won on American soil have been won by native-born Americans.
Why would the education establishment do this? Because they use this "crisis" to pick your pocket. Why should you pay more into their coffers if things are going along fine?
