re, "and I couldn't find any PREFS.JS file to modify"
it's in the user folder that's in the netscape folder that's in the programs folder.
when you are in there, you'll also find the netscape.hst file that can be deleted. it will simply regenerate upon restarting the browser.
rebuilding a corrupted netscape registry is nothing like fooling with windows registry. use search (start/find/files or folders) to locate these files, rick.
NSREG.DAT is in the c:\windows folder. with the browser closed, right-click the file, select 'rename' and change the DAT to BAK. the new NSREG.DAT will regenerate itself upon start up.
"Otherwise, downloading a clean copy seems like a simple winning strategy"
but is it working? <g3>
i used the above described methods to fix what i had, where you would have uninstalled and reinstalled the browser, and, according to your account, still not have it working right.
"I don't like to spend too much time being frustrated"
me neither, my man. which is why i employ all these terrific techniques we discuss here on the cl thread! <g3> the frustration level never gets very high.
