DoCoMo 3G Rollout On Track; Fujitsu Prepares Devices
By Kristy Bassuener
June 21, 2001

NTT DoCoMo will launch video-ready mobile phones to 1,200 trial third generation users in Tokyo today. Recipients of the much-anticipated video handsets may begin picking up their phones today, the company says. The 3G test uses DoCoMo's chosen W-CDMA network. THe trial launched in May after the company decided at the last minute to do a controlled rollout of the services to ensure quality for a full rollout in October.

According to international reports quoting a DoCoMo executive, the October 1 launch is still a go. DoCoMo's Takeshi Natsuno told attendees at a Singapore telecom conference that technical glitches will not stop the roll out schedule, reports say.

Separately, Japan's Fujitsu today say sit will release business-centric handheld devices in time for the Oct. 1 launch. The company said it would also consider developing handsets for the services. NEC Corp. and Matsushita have signed on to develop phones for DoCoMo services.
