hi e

re, "When I click on Favorites or History (it happens more often with Favorites), instead of the list popping up in that left column, the column stays blank and the computer freezes"

you indicated that you are running ie5.0. perhaps an upgrade to 5.5 would help. you should consider it. it may fix whatever the heck is wrong in the process. and imo, 5.5 is a better browser than 5.0.

a few things you may wish to try to fix your problem....

the ie repair tool is a good idea. so is

empty your temp directory. lots and lots of problems can rear their nasty little heads from residual stuff that is not being cleared from the temp folder. (if you had ie5.5, you could easily configure this to happen every time you closed your browser.) if you don't know the clickstream to do this, in ie5.0 select 'tools' from the top menu, then internet options\general tab\delete files button\ok

if that doesn't help, try resetting ie defaults.... tools\internet options\programs\reset web settings

if still no change, view these two settings and check them if not checked already....

tools\internet options\advanced\browsing...

'close unused folders in history and favorites'
&
'enable personalized favorites menu'

i am not real sure that the above two settings will make much difference, but they might. as always, keep track of your old settings in case you'd like to return to them.

none of these steps will cause damage to your pc

good luck

:)
