hi e
re, "About deleting junk mail w/o opening it. I saw your note on that earlier, and am trying it, but I have a question about it. You know how when an incoming em is highlighted in the inbox, and you haven't double clicked to officially open it up but it does show anyway in the narrow window at the bottom? Is that "open," and thus sending the 'live email address' message?"
i assume you are talking about messenger?
yes, highlighting it as you have described is opening it. you've told the spammer you are home when you've done that.
"The thing is, as soon as you right click on it to try to delete it w/o opening it, it does show some of the text at the bottom."
ah, you are so very correct. and i will show you how to get around that so that the mail remains unopened. try this ....
see that little bumpy horizontal bar on the separator between the top and bottom panes? if you run your mouse arrow over it, it turns light blue?
1. click on it and the two right-side panes become one. (it's a toggle... if you click it again the two panes reappear.) but for this, make the right side one pane. 2. go back to the suspected spam header and right-click on it. 3. select 'delete message' from the menu 4. the spam is tossed unopened into your trash folder
(you can let it reside there as long as you like, until you wish to empty the trash folder, then...)
5. re-click on the bumpy horizontal bar to bring back your preview pane 6. to empty trash, click on 'file' on top left menu, then 'empty trash on local mail'.
tell me if it works
:)
