If removing Alpha as a competitor _is_ a strategy, it is never going to be announced. There are many ways to accomplish the same end, none of them requiring some announcement. The FTC/SEC/DOJ clowns will either nix or it not based on _current_ facts on the ground, not some claim of being able to read Intel's long-range intentions. << Or Intel buys Alpha to make use of it in one form or other. If IA64 were/is so strong, they could easily ignore Alpha and all other pretenders. But that isn't the case as 7 years of development brings SpecInt numbers equal to the trailing CPU out there.>> It depends on the price. Considering patent issues, which are more important now than they were in the 70s and 80s, acquiring the DEC patents could be a very good deal...depending on the price. I was at a party on Saturday night where a senior DEC designer opined that he expected to hear he would be working for Intel soon. (I have no informed opinion one way or another.) --Tim May
