Compaq seems to have noticed it's in specially deep doo doo, according to the WSJ. If anybody remembers the decline and fall of DEC, this just sounds to me like another chapter, now its finally taking Compaq down with it.

03:51 ET Compaq (CPQ) 13.50: Company preparing a massive restructuring in which it will shift its focus from hardware to software and services, reports the Wall Street Journal... Move comes as CPQ struggles to deal with falling PC demand and the resulting price war... In a memo to employees, Chief Executive Michael D. Capellas notes that the company's goal is to "increase services from about one-fifth of Compaq's revenue today to one-third." Move likely to raise eyebrows on the street, though one possible winner is Dell (DELL).
