Before we had welfare, the church and private philanthropy helped the destitute. Of course there was never such a massive, artificially created and maintained underclass of welfare dependents then... Churches have ALWAYS been centers of community charity and activism. Private individuals have ALWAYS been the most effective engine of compassion. And A-holes like Cheney, and those MUCH richer, give the VAST majority of charity funding in this country - now and in the past. Who is the anti-compassionate A-Hole? How much do YOU give? That is the point, isn't it? Are you afraid that if we cut "social programs" no one will help? At least, no one but the rich. Could it be that the A-Holes are people like you? Derek
