Justin,

Perhaps something is missing from this comparison which might be an
important reason for price differentials in the computer equipment
biz. What is the quality of the Irix versus the Computer Shopper
platforms one can build? Coming from the embedded systems side of
the computer hardware world, I can safely say that the home PC's
generally contain the lowest-grade of components available and are
not meant for long-term service under heavy-use. It is more important
to compare the mean time between failures of the $9k/$12k systems.
The real cost of business computing seems to be the "owning" rather
than the "purchasing" of equipment. If your machine at work failed
right now, what would the cost be to your employer? Does the $9k
machine have the equivalent service arrangement as the higher-priced
one?

Depending on the needs of the purchaser, you both could be right.

Take it easy,

Norm
