Dear Paul:

If you can't tell from public data and real world uses, you must be blind, deaf, and dumb. P3 is slower than A4, Tbird, and soon, even Duron. P4 is already slower than Tbird and A4MP.

BTW, those precompiled IA64 SPEC binaries are a joke since, they could be made from hand optimized assembly code and reworked algorithms. Since some have not been able to compile the SPEC code successfully, IA-64 should be given a score of 0. Still, given the same for A4 and Tbird, binaries can be composed that increase speed by up to 10x (just use BLAS, ATLAS, and other sets of optimal routines in many SPEC programs) in individual programs (a 10x in one program yields a 26% increase in overall score (just 2 of these makes for an increase from 500 to 800)). Whoops, those great IA-64 SPECfp scores are then blown past. You can see the discussions in many places, for example, Ace's, JC's, and Tim Wilkin's web sites.

Pete
