Dave - re: "I seem to recall that there has been alot of research on SiGe for numerous years. Approximately how long does it take from initial research for a technology to become utilized in industry? "

That completely depends on the technology in question - and some technologies NEVER make it - and others become niche technologies.

Copper metallization was under development at IBM for about 15 years before it became commercially viable.

GaAs is a prime example of a perpetual niche technology.

Josephson Junctions made it for a brief period in time - and have faded off almost everyone's radar screen.

SiGe looks like it may have some applications in the former "GaAs" space - but still a niche technology.

Intel supposedly has invested in a foundry in Germany that will be using SiGe technology in the future.
