CyberWorks, Telstra May Adopt CDMA Technology for H.K. Network 06/24 21:14 By Kenneth Wong
Hong Kong, June 25 (Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong CSL Ltd., owned by Telstra Corp. and Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd., may adopt Qualcomm Inc. technology for one of three mobile phone networks, the Hong Kong Economic Journal said, without citing anyone.
CSL may use San Diego, California-based Qualcomm's code division multiple access technology for its 1+1 network, now using outdated time division multiple access, so as to provide high speed Web access on handsets, the paper said.
CSL, 60 percent owned by Telstra and 40 percent owned by CyberWorks, plans to transfer 1+1 customers to its two other networks. The paper didn't say how much the migration and the network upgrade will cost.
CSL, one of six Hong Kong mobile phone operators, has about 1 million of the city's 5.4 million wireless customers. Its two other services, 1010 and One2free, use the European global system for mobile communications and personal communications services technologies respectively.
