AMD Pioneers Multilevel Fabs--Intel said to be worried

<<Regardless of the source of this agreement, though, it is evident that the clear winner will be AMD. With the competitive threat of Compaq out of the picture, Dell will be much more willing to commit their server line to an exclusive relationship with AMD. With the clear technical superiority of Sledgehammer a given, today's Intel/Compaq deal makes a server agreement between AMD and Dell a slam dunk.>>

In addtion to design superiority, AMD clearly has manufacturing superiority. As Analyst Dan has noted so often, AMD is able to do with a single Fab in the former East Germany what Intel needs many, multibillion dollar wafer fabs in several countries to do.

In fact, AMD-based processors are so superior to Intel's that outlets like Fry's cannot keep AMD-based laptops or high-end desktops in stock...a visit to any Fry's will reveal how few AMD-based systems are on display, thus proving this point.

AMD is also on target to become the world leader in pillar-supported multi-level wafer fabs. Patterned after early Planar-process devices, the pillars being driven in the Dresden fab will make AMD the leader in multi-level wafer fabs. Sledgehammer will require Piledriver!

Foolish Intel is stuck with expanding its fabs into shells already built in the flat desert regions and green meadows.
