Figure 1. Research on the Motley Fool
Motley Fool began in 1994 as a "content provider" on America Online and, over the last several years, has arguably become one of the most popular on-line investment sites. The Motley Fool Web site has over 1.5 million visitors a month and the site’s message boards are a heavily used feature.
Compared to the other message board services described here, Motley Fool more actively monitors the goings on in the various discussion groups. Chat moderators are constantly on the lookout for inappropriate or abusive postings. In addition, to avoid potential problems with stock pumping, Motley Fool prohibits discussion of micro-cap stocks.
All guests are able to read the message boards. In order to write new messages, customize the boards, and track your favorite boards and posters, you are required to register, although there is no fee to do so. Once you are registered, you can choose from over a dozen different topic groups in the message board area. They include stocks, industry and market analysis, investment clubs, and international investing.
If you are not sure which board to select, you can use the search function to specify a ticker symbol, subject, author, or content. The site tracks the top 25 message boards based on the number of postings, and one of the most popular boards deals with day trading. Once you have selected a topic area and a specific board, you can search for messages that contain specific tickers or keywords.
A new feature to the Fool message boards is the "penalty box," where you can block the posts of those you do not want to read anymore.
