Silicon Investor is one of the more established message board services on the Internet. With over 140,000 message boards and 120,000 registered users, it is a popular hangout for those looking for the latest tidbit on popular Internet and technology stocks (Figure 3). The service is free if you wish to browse the boards, however you must pay $60 for a semiannual subscription to post messages and use most of the other features available at the site–the only fee charged by any of the major message board services.

With its sale to Go2Net in 1998, Silicon Investor has been integrated with Go2Net’s StockSite and users now have expanded access to financial data and news. Users are able to link to quotes, charts, news, company profiles, and earnings from the message boards.

Silicon Investor’s search module allows you to perform keyword searches of subject titles, the full text of a posting, and messages with links. Subscribers of Silicon Investor are able to post messages in the "stocktalk" area. They also can use the message tracking tools such as subjectmarks, peoplemarks, and hot subjects.

Unlike some other services, Silicon Investor allows discussion of penny stocks and OTC-traded issues. In fact, the penny stocks garner much of the attention here and, likewise, have the most active message boards.
