mr mark, yes , there's a difference between downloaded and opened e-mail. And, because verification of opening seems to be automatic on AOL - that may explain why AOL is popular with spammers, or so I've heard. But the rest of us would have to authorize e-mail notification to a spammer that the spam has been opened.

Since thecow and I have never received spam with a request for acknowledgement that it has been opened, this is a moot issue for me. Far more important is how to reduce the amount of spam arriving in my inbox. Even that I can handle since yahoo and hotmail are my spam magnets, and those two do a good job of separating most of it from legitimate e-mail.
