Formerly Deja News, Deja.com offers access to newsgroups via a Web-based platform–meaning all you need is a Web browser (Figure 4). The service currently has around 45,000 discussion forums–Deja member forums as well as those derived from Usenet newsgroups–and boasts over one million registered users. If you find that a topic in which you are interested is not represented on Deja.com, you can create your own Web-based discussion forum. Furthermore, forums can support real-time chat. Deja’s powerful search mechanism gives users two levels of functionality: quick search and power search. With quick search, you can search discussions or communities by keyword. Power search adds flexibility by giving users the ability to search by date and author. The Deja tracker will monitor posts, threads, or search results and send E-mail updates whenever new messages appear. Similarly, the E-mail discussion forum will inform you of new posts for a specific discussion forum.
