HI all... just wondered what some of you here might think of this story on Compaq's/Intel move from a hardware site's perspective:

"Compaq confirms Intel Alpha spin-off - Unhappy customers may demur"

Some snippets:

Compaq hopes to persuade its customers that this is a
good move and wheeled in a number of corporations such
as Black and Decker to endorse it.

...Some customers will take a different view. One analyst who
declined to be named said that while the Alpha-IPF deal
appears sound, the "devil is in the details". He added: "I
hope that the company learned from its atrocious
mismanagement of the AlphaNT magnum opus."

In private conversations with The Inquirer over the last
week, some engineers said they were disillusioned. Some
had hoped that IBM would take over the platform, and
others might well walk where they feel their expertise will
be better used. µ

Not that investors care, but hardware sites around the net are dismayed at Compaq's move.. the view is basically they sold their soul to the devil... Intel has effectively removed a major competitor to their attempt at IA-64 dominance.. and there is now a real fear that this new deal means Compaq not only will no longer help develop AMD's 64 bit competitor to Itanium in Sledgehammer.. but may decide not to offer any more desktop/server/mobile offerings of AMD (Athlon 4/Athlon MP) as part of the agreement...

On the other hand.. as suggested in the above link and in several others.. they may be a lot of Alpha engineers who will not want to work for Intel and AMD may be able to get some of them.

I wondered if any here had comments about that
