Some would claim this is a direct result of increasing influence of Television and Video Games/Computers. Both passive and instant gratification. Makes it difficult for teachers too, as they haven't developed material that grabs and retains the same level of attention that our entertainment designers have.

I see this in my brothers kids. Whereas when younger, we would build forts out of available scrap wood and avoided being indoors at all costs, his kids seem at a loss without a steady stream of mfgd entertainment, be it videos, games, or other kids. The scrap wood lays around unused, unless we point out how it could be employed for 'fun'.

Another aspect of this is setting false expectations. The youngest continually tries to replicate (with little success or grace) fancy skateboard tricks he can do with the video game, ignoring the basics and the potential fun of just seeing how fast you can go on a decent slope.
