the 30-30 was never a military cartridge. it is strictly a
small game short range load usually used in the dangerous
winchester type level action system. I don't advocate the
lever as it is too easy to leave on cock and the loading is
slow and you have no way of knowing what is in the magazine.
the winchester .257 is used as nato military cartridge in
Canada where its mil deignation is 6.5 mill I believe. .303
british is very common hunting rifle in Canada. 6.5 and 7 mm
of different type are common sizes too. there is even the
odd .303 grooved case type for globe semis. personally i
prefer the .303 as it is a light rifle with low kick for the
horsepower with a clean, fast strong and positive enfield
action. It is also inherently accurate in many of its
configurations and with its low noise and kick is more
accurate to shoot from a user point of view as well. (mk iii
and iv)
