My analogy with global warming and Kyoto would be that you are trying to consider Kyoto as the compromise...

My point in bringing up Kyoto to you was not to find a compromise or consensus on either abortion or global warming. You and I have been there, done that. I don't think there is one. I have nothing to say on either subject beyond what I've already said. My point was to try to hold up a mirror for you to get another perspective on the position on abortion that you hold. You are to abortion what the Kyoto folks are to global warming. I know
that you think the Kyoto folks are misguided if not downright nuts, so I offer the mirror as a lagniappe for you to do with as you please.

The real nuts on global warming are the environmental terrorists. The Kyoto crowd are normal people who are true believers. For whatever reason, they see the end of the world from pollution. No, the science won't get you there although it offers some hints. If those hints resonate with you, then you're a believer.

You did a fine job of describing the nuts of the pro-life POV. You are amongst that second tier--the normal people who are true believers, just like the Kyoto folks. You can't prove that a fetus is a person, but for whatever reason, that resonates with you and you believe abortion is a human rights violation.

I acknowledge that the notion that abortion is murder does not resonate with me and the global warming one does. For you, the converse is true. Now I'm pretty green, but I don't support Kyoto because I think that's too drastic an approach unless we have more of a consensus. I recognize the danger of following true believers. I am suggesting to you that you reconsider not your personal position on abortion but whether or not you can justify forcing such a drastic step as outlawing abortion before the populace is ready for it.

Just as you think the Kyoto bunch is over the top, so would most people think that outlawing abortion is over the top. Just as I turn the water off when I brush my teeth but stop short of Kyoto, you can do whatever it is that you do personally to avoid abortion but that you stop short of outlawing it lest you be tarred with the Kyoto brush.

Just think about it.
