A favorite is Apex Silver Mines. Rinaldi thinks the supply-demand fundamentals for silver are strong, with demand outstripping supply. He likes Apex because it has a strong balance sheet, is a low-cost producer and has one of the largest silver mines in the world, located in Bolivia.

"This is the only good play in the silver business," he says. The company has $1.50 a share in cash on its balance sheet.

The Bolivian mine Rinaldi refers to has 500 million ounces of proven reserves, with another two to four times that in unproven reserves in its main pit. He thinks the company is worth $40 a share even if silver prices remain stagnant, which he thinks is unlikely. It currently trades around $11 a share.
