Jim, the margins in back-end servers will come down all right. Big customers will be transitioning away from proprietary expensive RISC servers like UltraSPARC and coming to better performing, higher volume, lower-cost, and (relatively) open-platform servers like Xeon and Itanium. Even a $4,500 Itanium CPU is a bargain, considering the $60K servers they are going into cost much, much less than a comparably-performing RISC server.

Of course, you weren't talking about the margins of RISC machines, right? That's why I called your comment "sour grapes," because the market for Intel-based servers still hasn't matured yet, unlike x86-based desktops.
