Mips Loses Market Share to Rambus in Chip Design, Gartner Says By Cecile Daurat
London, June 11 (Bloomberg) -- ARM Holdings Plc and Mips Technologies Inc., the world's two largest designers of semiconductors, last year lost market shares to Rambus Inc. and Parthus Technologies Plc, a smaller Irish rival, a report says.
The worldwide market for chip designs last year rose 40 percent to $690 million as manufacturers moved toward semiconductors that combine several functions, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of market research firm Gartner Group Inc.
ARM's market share fell to 16.6 percent from 17.9 percent in 1999. Mips Technology lost more ground to 13.3 percent in 2000, from 17.2 percent in 1999. Rambus, the No. 3, took a 10.5 percent share of the market, while Parthus, the No. 10, rose to 2.8 percent.
Between them, the three largest designers took more than 40 percent of the market last year. Chips designers such as ARM and Mips don't bear manufacturing costs. They license their designs to companies such Intel Corp. and receive royalty payments when products based on their designs, ranging from mobile phones to game consoles, are sold.
