"It's not that I don't like my Norton AV2001"
the program i mentioned (and recommended) is norton systemworks, which has a component called cleansweep. it is not a part of nav.
"I'm wondering if any of these other uninstall utilities would be of equivalent worth in your opinion"
not having used them, i can't produce a viable answer for you, ray. i have had very good success with cleansweep, and i have read one editor's choice award and review after another for systemworks. i found something that works and i stuck with it. there must be others, but i have no knowledge of their pros and cons. i used to be quick to say that we get what we pay for, but i have come to learn that some freeware is awesome. zonealarm comes to mind here. <g3>
"In particular, I doubt a quarter of a million folks could be wrong: download.cnet.com "
i see what you're doing... you're looking at the 230,819 figure for number of downloads, but i would caution you against assuming that that figure represents satisfied customers, when the accompanying user rating chart shows that 25% of those responding give it a thumbs down.
[edit in: if i go to a cleansweep cnet download site (and all i could find real quick were cs patches), i find user approval ratings around 95%... download.cnet.com ]
as for reg cleaners, same old same old, ray... i'm a symantec user, and i like the registry cleaning tools found within cleansweep.
i meant to remind you to tell your friend about possibly using trialware versions of norton products. i never have, but it seems like a good way to go.
good luck
:)
