Hi Jim,

There's talk of spending $4B on infrastructure to extend broadband access to rural and remote areas. The federal government won't be able to come up with all of the money themselves so a public-private sector joint development is being discussed. I have no doubt it will happen (Canadians think basic services like mail and air transport should be available to all citizens at a reasonable cost) but I don't think the time frame would help 360 (the company as it currently exists) out of its dilemma. They'll have to look elsewhere.

The province of Alberta is implementing a similar proposal called Supernet and the idea is to use fiber connections where economical and supplement it with fixed wireless links and access where fiber to the curb is too expensive. The basic idea is to hook up libraries, schools and hospitals to these big pipes, and have some ISP's piggyback to help defray costs. The concept is a good one; funding is a little trickier and the contract awards are somewhat political. I believe 360 was part of the winning bid for Supernet...

Regards, Rob
