PNG government imposes curfew,

The Papua New Guinea Government has imposed an overnight curfew in the
capital, Port Moresby.

Richard Dinnen reports the Government hopes the curfew will ease
continuing tension following violent clashes between police and student
protestors.

The PNG Cabinet has endorsed Prime Minister Mekere Morauta's decision
to impose a curfew in Port Moresby from tonight until July 10th. The curfew
will be in force from 7pm to 5am. Sir Mekere says the curfew is essential to
assist police in controlling the situation in the town. Acting Police
Commissioner Joseph Kupo will be in control of implementing and enforcing
the curfew. The Government decision to leave police in charge of the curfew
is a vote of confidence in a force that has been widely criticised for the
forceful way it broke up a peaceful student protest on Monday night, and the
ensuing clashes with protestors in which at least three students were shot
dead. Rd Port Moresby
