For Bilow: More on Winbond mass production of high speed memory chips designed by Rambus. Just in case you missed it...

TAIPEI, June 27 (Reuters) - Taiwan microchip maker Winbond
Electronics Corp said on Wednesday it would begin mass
production of high-speed memory chips designed by Rambus Inc
of the United States in the fourth quarter of 2001.
Winbond said in a statement it would boost production
volumes of 256 megabit Rambus dynamic random access memory
(RDRAM), which runs many times faster than the Taiwan firm's
main product of conventional DRAM.
The statement gave no details on licensing fees paid to
Rambus, or planned production volumes of the memory chips used
mainly in personal computers.
Spot prices for less advanced types of DRAM have fallen
below cost of production for many chip firms, bringing them into
the red. Winbond booked a T$425 million loss in the first three
months of this year, while Micron Technologies , one of
the world's largest DRAM firms, said it made a US$313.4 million
loss in its fiscal third quarter.
Dominant microprocessor maker Intel Corp has paired
its top-of-the-line Pentium 4 processor with RDRAM, while Sony's
<6758.T> high-performance Playstation 2 game console also uses
the product designed by Rambus Inc.
